AMCATS drop GNAC opener to Cadets

PAXTON, Mass. (9.17.11) – The Norwich Cadets men's soccer team defeated Anna Maria College 3-1 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action today at AMCAT field. The Cadets double their wins to a 2-5 (1-0 GNAC) while the loss keeps the AMCATS winless at 0-5-1 (0-1 GNAC).

Norwich got the game's first goal in the 24th minutes when Eric Weir (Ipswich, Mass.) headed a long pass from senior Ryan Robertson (Northfield, VT) past AMCAT goaltender Jeff Bolton (Williamsburg, VA) for the 1-0 lead.

After a defensive take down in the box, the AMCATS' Bryan Blomgren (Auburn, Mass.) converted a penalty kick in the 58th minute to tie the score at one.

The tie only lasted a minute and a half when Norwich freshman Derek Morin (South Paris, Maine) buried a long cross from the corner from sophomore Joe Young (McLean, VA) for the game winner making the game 2-1.

Garrett Shufelt (Clifton Park, NY) extended the lead to 3-1 when he put back a rebound off a Weir shot in the 78th minute.

Bolton played very well in net for the AMCATS making 11 saves on the day, his counterpart Alex Toomey (Anchorage, Alaska) had 2 saves in the win.

The Cadets held the advantage in both Shots 25-6 and corners 7-1 on the day.

Norwich returns to action on Wednesday when the travel to Green Mountain for a 4:00 pm match-up and the AMCATS host Lesley University at 7:00 PM on Monday night.
