AMCATS' Second Half Surge Leads to 5-2 Win

PAXTON, Mass. (9.29.10) – The Anna Maria College men's soccer team scored four unanswered goals in the second half and held off a late charge from Massachusetts Maritime to secure their first home victory of the season by a score of 5-2 on a rainy night in Paxton, Mass. The win improves the AMCATS record to 2-9-1 overall, while the Buccaneers fall to 0-7 overall.

 Junior Allan Mugisha (Burlington, Mass.) came off the bench and scored two goals in the second half, on a night that saw the AMCATS don pink shoelaces, headbands and even hair color for Breast Cancer Awareness. AMC also received single goals from Justin Hyland (Leicester, Mass.), Enco Lika (Worcester, Mass.) and AJ Lambert (Charlton, Mass.).

 The Buccaneers' were led by Stuart Kingsman and Hieu Nguyen who both had goals on the night and Tim McDonough who added an assist.

 AJ Lambert started the scoring off for the AMCATS, he followed his own direct kick towards the net and beat goaltender Brett Young to the ball and putt the ball in the back of the net off his chest for the 1-0 lead.

Mass. Maritime scored at the 41st minute to tie the game at 1-1 with a drive from just inside 10 yards off the foot of Nguyen. The Buccaneers took a 2-1 lead just over a minute into the second half. Junior Tim McDonough made a beautiful cross from the left wing for a header by Stuart Kingsman.

 AMC tied the game at 2-2 in the 51st minute when junior Justin Hyland drove towards the net and faked the MMA defender and drove the ball to the right corner of the net past the Bucs' goaltender.

 From there on in Anna Maria controlled the game and the score. Mugisha scored back-to-back goals eight minutes apart to put the game out of reach. Junior Enco Lika scored his third goal of the season with just :36 seconds left in the game for the 5-2 final.

 Anna Maria returns to the pitch on Saturday when they host Suffolk University in a GNAC conference game at 2:30pm.
