Worcester City Men’s Soccer Tournament - Day 1

PAXTON, Mass. – WPI and Clark were both victorious in day one action of the 4th annual Worcester City Men's Soccer Tournament held on AMCAT field tonight.

In game one WPI defeated the Becker College Hawks 5-0 in the season opener for both teams.

The Engineers had eight players earn points on the day while outshooting the Hawks 22-3. WPI sophomore Chris Ciampa (Danvers, Mass) had a goal and an assist along with teammate Kevin Ducharme (Bedford, Mass.). Ciampa scored the game winner just 4:40 into the game.

Ducharme's then took a feed from Ciampa that found the back of the net at the 17th minute. WPI also received goals from Jason Hopkins (Mendon, Mass), Stephen Partridge (Worcester, Mass.) and Tynan MacLeod (Groton, Mass). Goalkeeper Jeff Wong (Millington, NJ) made two saves in the shutout.

Senior Gary Johnson (Cherry Valley, Mass.) and sophomore Aldo Karkanjozi (Sterling Heights, MI) led the Haws with a shot apiece, while goaltender Tim McDonald (Holden, Mass) made seven saves in net for Becker.

In the tournament nightcap, Clark was paced by an Oscar Zapata (Lima, Peru) hat trick as they defeated host Anna Maria College 4-2. The Cougars opened up a 3-0 lead before the AMCATS could battle back to cut the lead to 3-2. A late Clark goal put the game out of reach for Anna Maria.

Sophomore Zachary Doenmez opened up the scoring at the 5th minute off a cross from Gianluca Ranallo (Scarsdale, NY). Zapata then added goals at the 28th and 52nd minutes to make the game 3-0.

The AMCATS then rallied with an unassisted goal at the 58th minute by junior Justin Hyland (Leicester, Mass) and then Enco Lika (Worcester, Mass) scored off a pass from AJ Lambert (Charlton, Mass.) with just over 15 minutes to play.

The Cougars got a late goal from Zapata after some sloppy play in the AMCATS defensive end.

AMCAT goalie Jeff Bolton (Williamsburg, VA) had 4 saves in the loss.

All four teams return to action on Sunday, September 4 when WPI hosts day two of the Worcester City Men's Soccer Tournament. WPI will take on Anna Maria at noon and Becker will face Clark at 2:30 pm
