AMCATS Pounce Falcons in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn – Going in to the road game against Albertus Magnus, the AMCATS were 0-2 in conference play with losses to Johnson & Wales and Lasell in the first week of their GNAC schedule. Wednesday evening, the 'Cats were able to get in to the win column with a convincing, 13-4 win over their AMC counterparts.

Leading the AMCATS was freshman Brady Seymour with four goals and two assists on the night. Brandon Pavoni, who leads the team in scoring, netted three goals on his own and added an assist. With two goals each in the game, former GNAC Rookies of the week, Cameron Perry and Jake Klemba added to the AMCAT tally. Rounding out the scoring for Anna Maria with a goal apiece were Colton Layman and Isaiah Hicks. Team assists leader Ryan Rockwal added another assist to his season total in the game as well. Goalie Paul Schwarz faced just 17 shots in the game, the second lowest shot total he has seen all season when playing a full 60 minutes, and he saved 13 of those shots.

The Falcons, scoring just four goals in the game, got three of those four from James May who took 16 shots on the night, finding the target nine times with three getting by. The other goal was scored by Brennan Moore. Christopher Magnifico assisted on three of the goals scored by Albertus. Goalie Jack Kerner faced an on slot of AMCAT shots, 36 to be exact, their third highest shots on target on the season, he made 23 saves allowing 13 goals.

Anna Maria opened the scoring in this one five minutes in when Layman scored, unassisted, to go up 1-0. Perry would make it 2-0 a minute and a half later when he scored his unassisted goal. Just 15 second after Perry's score, Moore scored the first for Albertus, from Magnifico, to make it 2-1. The AMCATS weren't done in the first as Pavoni scored two with 7:09 and 0:43 on the clock and Perry scored his second of the contest with just over two minutes left on the clock. At the end of one, the 'Cats had a four goal, 5-1 lead. A lead that in the past they have seen disappear.

To begin the second, the Anna Maria unanswered streak came to an end as the Falcons scored a man-up goal from the stick of May, his first of the night, from Magnifico, to get back within three. What happened over the rest of the second period, and in the to third, was something unprecedented for the AMCATS this season. 29 second after the Falcons goal, Klemba scored to open the gap back out to four goals. Over the next four minutes, the 'Cats continued to pelt the back of the net with three more goals from Seymour, Pavoni, in a man-up situation, and Seymour again at the 9:38 mark. With the score 9-2, neither team would score again in the first half.

To Begin the second half, on a four goal unanswered streak, the 'Cats continued their domination. Hickes scored his lone goal a minute in to the period and Seymour scored two more before the clock struck 10 minutes remaining in the quarter. This gave the AMCATS a 12-2 advantage and a seven goal unanswered run that would eventually be broken up with 2:09 left in the quarter with May scoring his second. At the end of three, the AMCATS had a commanding 12-3 lead over their hosts.

In the fourth, the goal production slowed as each team scored one. May scored his third for Albertus and Klemba scored his second for Anna Maria. That goal came with 9:34 remaining and that is how the game would end, 13-4 in favor of the visiting Anna Maria AMCATS. With the win, the AMCATS improve to 1-2 in conference play and jump two spots in the standings.

The AMCATS are back on the field and back on the road on Saturday at 3pm against 3-6 (1-2) Regis College in Weston, Mass.
