Strong Second Period Leads Vikings Past Men's Hockey

AUBURN, MA- On Thursday February 20^th, 2025, the Anna Maria College men's ice hockey team would host the Vikings of Salem State. The AMCATS lost the game 5-2.

The AMCATS got the jump on the Vikings in the first period with a goal about 13 minutes into the period off the stick of Tobias Omholt off a pass from Owen Barrow. Nearly a minute later, the AMCATS would strike again against the Vikings off a powerplay with a shot coming from Matthew Byrne assisted by Derek Raposo. The AMCATS came out fast and hit the gas early against the Vikings as they would take the lead over the Vikings in the first period 2 to 0. The AMCATS would not only bring the offensive momentum but would remain strong defensively to keep the Vikings at 0 to end the first period and head to the locker room with the lead over the Vikings 2 to 0. 

The second period the AMCATS would look to continue the same momentum offensively and maintain the defensive zone as they did in the first period. The AMCATS however, would not get what they hoped for as the Vikings took control of the second period against the AMCATS. The Vikings would go on to score four consecutive goals in the second period to gain the lead over the AMCATS 4 to 2. Despite the AMCATS finding some offensive opportunities in the second period, the Vikings goaltender would deny all the AMCAT chances, and the AMCATS would head down to the Vikings 4 to 2 at the end of the second period. 

Despite the AMCATS being outscored in the second period, they hoped to find their offensive momentum and defensive mindset in the third period to try and pull off a comeback win against the Vikings. The AMCATS would have some key opportunities in the third period offensively, but it would be the Vikings goaltender to shut down the AMCATS, and the Vikings to tuck one more goal past the AMCATS in the third period with about less than two minutes left to secure the win over the AMCATS. The AMCATS would fall to the Vikings 5 to 2. 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

• The AMCATS would get their 31^st powerplay goal against the Vikings. 
• The AMCATS would out-shoot the Vikings 50 to 39. 

COMING UP:

Men's ice hockey is back in action on Saturday February 22, 2025, where they will travel to Plymouth, MA to take on the Panthers of Plymouth State for a MASCAC conference game. Opening puck drop is at 6:00pm.
