Chargers End Men’s Hoops’ Streak, 70-67

PAXTON, MA: The Anna Maria College men's basketball team saw their five-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon with a 70-67 loss to Colby-Sawyer College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Fuller Center in Paxton.

THE BASICS:

TURNING POINT:

  • After trailing at halftime, the AMCATS opened up a 57-45 lead with 9:45 left in the game off a three-pointer from freshman forward Sean Zabari (Miami, FL). But the Chargers rallied with a 20-5 run to take the lead, capped off with a layup from junior forward Conor Kelly (Charlestown, MA) with 3:28 to go. Down six with 35 seconds left, Anna Maria sophomore guard Trevian Grenon (Sutton, MA) hit on a layup-and-one, pulling the hosts to within three. But two three-pointers in the closing seconds were off the mark for the AMCATS, and the team took its first loss since January 8th, a 98-90 overtime loss on the road to the Chargers.

 

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Anna Maria sophomore forward Gabe Armstead (Dallas, GA) came one board short of a double-double with 14 points, nine rebounds and two blocks.
  • Colby-Sawyer junior forward Omar Boone (Colorado City, TX) was dominant with 26 points off 11-of-19 shooting while powering his way to 12 rebounds.
  • Anna Maria senior guard Kennedy Minix-Rogers (Smyrna, GA) filled the stat-line with 14 points, five rebounds, five assists and a steal, all while shooting 7-of-13 from the floor.
  • Colby-Sawyer freshman forward Kevin Cummings (Portsmouth, NH) finished with 12 points off four three-pointers.
  • Grenon scored 12 points with seven rebounds, while Zabari matched a career-high with 11 points off the bench.
  • Colby-Sawyer held a definite advantage in three-point shooting, going a combined 6-of-26 (23.1 percent) from behind the arc to 2-of-13 (15.4 percent) for Anna Maria.
