GNAC QUARTERFINALS: Field Hockey Downed By Regis, 1-0

PAXTON, MA - In Anna Maria's first home field hockey game since 2015, the squad (8-9, 4-4 GNAC) lost to the Regis Pride (8-10, 4-4 GNAC) 1-0 Saturday morning in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) quarterfinals at Caparso Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both sides played a defensive first quarter as the Pride only had a 2-1 shot advantage. The AMCATS defense did a great job to maintain the 0-0 tie courtesy of a defensive save from Emily Randall (Feeding Hills, MA) who knocked down a Sheridan Blaha (Waltham, MA) shot in front of the net.
  • Anna Maria almost struck first at 16:05 in the second quarter when Allyson Shaw (Holden, MA) generated her own offense and put a shot on net that went just wide of Regis goalie, Hope Winkin (Winslow, ME).
  • Later in the second, Blaha and the Pride scored the eventual game-winner at the 19:26 mark. Regis drew a foul near mid-field and Blaha received the pass at the 10-yard marker. Once Blaha had the ball, she pushed her way to the net and sent a shot past Hannah Tobey (Falmouth, MA) into the upper left corner.
  • The AMCATS had a chance for the equalizer in the fourth quarter at 45:59 when the 'Cats drew a penalty corner. Meghan Sonia (West Tisbury, MA) corralled the pass from the corner and had two shots on Winkin but was turned away each time.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Tobey made five saves for the AMCATS and ends the season with a 7-4 overall record.
  • For the Pride, Winkin made two saves on the afternoon.
  • Regis held the shot advantage by a margin of 10-4.
  • Sonia's two shots paced the AMCATS offense, Brittney Cherry (Worcester, MA) and Shaw each had one respectively.

WHAT'S NEXT

Anna Maria's regular season comes to an end with an overall 8-9 record and 4-4 record in conference play. The squad will look to build off the success from this year to carry toward next season. Meanwhile, Regis travels to Saint Joesph's (ME) for a GNAC semi-finals matchup on Wednesday, November 6 at a time to be determined later.
