FIELD HOCKEY: Anna Maria shuts down Bay Path

The Basics:

- The Lead: Senior Nicole Denver (Springfield, Mass.) and sophomore Anne Melanson (Grafton, Mass.) scored two goals apiece and freshman Chayna Bingham- Hendricks (Mashpee, Mass.) added a goal and two assists Thursday afternoon as Anna Maria College defeated Bay Path University, 6-0, in a non-conference field hockey game at AMCAT Field.

How It Happened:

-Anna Maria needed less than three minutes into the game to get on the scoreboard as Denver redirected a ball from Bingham-Hendricks into the back of the goal for a 1-0 lead.

-Denver added her second of the game and team-leading 10th goal of the season in the 21st minute when she knocked in a rebound to up the lead to 2-0.

-Melanson tallied her first goal of the game in the 28th minute on a deflection from Bingham-Hendricks to give the AMCATS a 3-0 lead at halftime.

-Anna Maria pulled away in the second half as Bingham-Hendricks put in her own rebound for her third goal of the season in the 41st minute to push the margin to four goals.

-The home team tacked on two more goals in less than a minute as Melanson added her second of the game and fifth of the season in the 48th minute, and freshman Brittney Cherry (Worcester, Mass.) rounded out the scoring with her first career goal in the 49th minute.

Inside the Numbers

-Denver reached the 10-goal mark for the second time in her career, having scored 16 as a sophomore in 2015.

-The AMCATS dominated play, and finished with a 28-1 advantage in shots and a 14-1 margin in penalty corners.

-Junior Danielle Huston (Spencer, Mass.) did not need to make a save to earn the victory for Anna Maria.

-Senior Bethany Rogers (Plymouth, Mass.) had a busy day in the Wildcat goal, finishing with 15 saves.

 

Up Next:

-The AMCATS play their final home game of the season on Saturday with a key Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest against Rivier University (10:00 a.m.). Anna Maria will honor its three seniors prior to the game on Senior Day.

-Bay Path plays a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) contest Sunday at Becker College (12 noon).
