FIELD HOCKEY: Anna Maria falls to Mount Ida in GNAC contest

The Basics:

- The Lead: Freshman Ema Atherton (Sanbornton, N.H.) tallied a goal and three assists Saturday morning to lead Mount Ida College to a 4-1 victory over Anna Maria College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference field hockey game at AMCAT Field. Junior Sarah Hemstock (Northford, Conn.) added a pair of goals in the win for the Mustangs.

How It Happened:

-Hemstock opened the scoring for the visitors 12 minutes into the game when she took a pass from Atherton and shot it into the cage for the first of her two goals in the game.

-Anna Maria tied the game at 1-1 early in the second half when sophomore Anne Melanson (Grafton, Mass.) bunted the ball out of midair and past the goalie after a cross by sophomore Allyson Shaw (Holden, Mass.) It was Melanson's third goal of the season.

-The Mustangs came back to take the lead for good less than a minute later when Atherton collected a loose ball off an AMCAT defender and knocked home her first goal of the season, and the eventual game-winner.

-Atherton assisted on the final two Mustang goals. She set up Hemstock for her second of the game after a penalty corner in the 57th minute, and assisted freshman Megan Jusell (Cape Cod, Mass.) for her second of the season in the 62nd minute.

Inside the Numbers

-Hemstock is second on the team with 13 goals this season.

-Atherton entered the game with just one assist on the season.

-The Anna Maria defense kept Mount Ida leading scorer Lexi Minicucci (Westfield, Mass.) off the scoresheet.

-Sophomore Grace Ryan (Livermore Falls, Maine) made three saves to earn the win for the Mustangs.

-Senior Bryanna Tobin (Deep River, Conn.) made four saves in the first 62 minutes, and junior Danielle Huston (Spencer, Mass.) made one save in the final eight minutes.

-Mount Ida finished with a 12-5 advantage in shots and an 8-5 margin in penalty corners.
