Fitchburg State Shoots Past Anna Maria, 8-0

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 3, 2011) – Senior Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) collected a team-high eight points to lead the Fitchburg State field hockey team to its first victory of the season, an 8-0 win over Anna Maria College this afternoon.

With three scores in the contest, Jacobs tied the program's all-time goals mark of 36, set by Amy Kosiewski back in 1993. For her career, Jacobs has tallied 93 points and currently remains just 12 points shy of Kosiewski's program mark of 105.

In the contest, the Falcons controlled much of the game's tempo, ripping 21 shots on net and 27 targets for the game. Fitchburg State opened the first half with a quick 3-0 lead as senior Kaylee Bergeron (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford) and Jacobs tallied a trio of markers in just a three minute span. Bergeron touched first at the 14:11 mark, redirecting a feed from senior Mari Roma (Foxborough, Mass./Foxborough) before Jacobs converted back-to-back scores for her first two goals of the season. Sophomore Rebecca Bush (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) rounded out the Falcons first half production with her first tally of the year at 23:57.

In the second half, the Falcons continued to flourish with Jacobs leading the way just five minutes into the period. The senior forward completed her hat-trick, redirecting Mary-Anne Goodsell's (W. Springfield, Mass./White Oaks) feed from the right side for a 5-0 cushion. Junior Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) added to the scoring mix with her first goal of the year, while Bergeron and Roma completed the scoring by the 50 minute mark.

In net, sophomore Rachel Mays (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) earned the victory for the Falcons, stopping one shot in her first half effort, while senior Taylor Begin (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) also turned in a one save, scoreless half. Freshman goaltender Marita Steinmetz (Grafton, Mass./Grafton) collected 13 saves in the complete game effort for the AmCats.

Fitchburg State (1-1, 0-0 LEC) will be back in action on Wednesday as it travel to Becker College at 4p.m. Anna Maria (0-2, 0-0 NECC) will host Saint Joseph's (Me.) on Monday at 1 p.m.
