Schebel Leads AMC Past Daniel Webster

PAXTON, Mass. (10.24.11) – Senior Katie Schebel had a three assists as the Anna Maria College women's field hockey team defeated Daniel Webster College 5-3 in New England Collegiate Conference action tonight at AMCAT field. With the win Anna Maria moves to 6-10 (3-2 NECC) on the year while Daniel Webster drops to 4-8 (2-3 NECC).

Tallying the score sheet with Schebel was freshman Katherine Bant with a goal and an assist, Marybeth McClune with two goals, Brooke Denver and Nichole Lowe with a goal and defender Shannon Looney added an assist.

The AMCATS took a quick 1-0 lead when junior Marybeth McClune (Worcester, Mass.) tipped a cross pass from Shannon Looney (Leicester, Mass.) into an open net. It was McClune's ninth goal of the season.

AMC doubled their lead just ten minutes later. Senior Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass.) had a drive from 30 yards out that freshman Katherine Bant (Johnstown, NY) one timed past Daniel Webster goaltender Amy Prince (Hope Valley, RI) for the 2-0 halftime lead.

Anna Maria quickly made it a 3-0 game shortly into the second half. After a defensive corner and a drive by Schebel, Brooke Denver (New Britain, Conn.) snuck a shot past the sprawling Eagles' keeper.

Daniel Webster broke up the shutout when Courtney Brennan (Beverly, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal in the 41st minute. But Anna Maria got that goal back just over a minute later when freshman Nichole Lowe (Saugus, Mass.) tipped in a big drive from the top of the circle by Schebel.

The Eagles once again cut the lead in half. Sophomore Shelby Mortin (N. Kingstown, RI) scored on a penalty stroke after the AMC had caused a deliberate defensive foul in the circle. Mortin tucked a quick shot just inside the right post from 7 yard out.

Anna Maria continued their pressure down field and made it a 5-2 game after a Katherine Bant seeing eye pass made it through traffic to an open McClune on the far post for another AMC score.

Eagle's Courtney Brennan scored in the 66th minute for her second goal of the game and the 5-3 final.

Daniel Webster's net minder finished the game with 6 saves while her counterpart Marita Steinmetz (Grafton, Mass.) had two saves in the win.
