Wheaton Pulls Away from AMCATS, 5-2

PAXTON, Mass. (10.2.11) – The Wheaton College field hockey team scored twice in the last five minutes of the first half to pull away from the AMCATS 5-2 during a non-conference contest at AMCAT Field on Sunday Afternoon. The win improves the Lyons to 6-5 overall, while the loss knocks the AMCATS to 4-7 on the season.

The Lyons dominated the first half holding a 14-0 penalty corner advantage. Senior Aliza Underhill (Corinth, Maine) tallied first for Wheaton, when she converted a penalty corner with a blast from the top of the circle. Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass.) had the initial pass out from the corner for the assist.

The AMCATS stunned the Lyons defense and went down the field and notched the game at 1-1. Junior Mary McClune (Worcester, Mass.) scored her team leading 7th goal of the season at the 20th minute mark. Junior Brooke Denver (New Britain, Conn.) fed a pass thru to a streaking McClune down the left wing and she buried the ball past Wheaton's goalkeeper Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass.).

Wheaton finished out the half with two quick goals. Emily Asack (Stoughton, Mass.) notched her ninth goal of the season off a scramble in front of the net at 30:25 and Emily Arena (Northfield, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal with 1:12 left for a 3-1 lead at halftime.

The AMCATS came out strong in the second half cutting the lead to 3-2 on a Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass.) goal. On the AMCATS first corner of the day, Katherine Bant (Johnstown, NY) fed a soft pass to Schebel just inside the circle and Katie one timed the ball to the back of the net.

AMC played hard all game but the offense of the Lyons proved to be too strong. Wheaton received second half goals from Gillian Mann (Burlington, VT) and Emily Chick (Bangor, ME) for the 5-2 final.

The AMCATS return to action next Saturday when they host NECC rival Wheelock College at 1:00 am.
