Bears Pull Away from AMCATS

PAXTON, Mass. (9.22.11) –After battling to a 0-0 first half score the Bridgewater State University field hockey team scored four times in the second half to pull away from Anna Maria College for a 4-1 win in a non-conference matchup at AMCAT Field on Thursday. The win improves the Bears to 3-3 overall while the AMCATS drop to 2-5 on the year.

Freshman Katherine Bant (Johnstown, NY) scored her fourth goal of the season for Anna Maria and MJ Steinmetz (Grafton, MA) had 14 saves on the day.

Juniors Megan Cullinane (Lunenburg, MA) and Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, MA) led the charge for the Bears, each scoring twice while putting a combined seven shots on goal. Freshman Emma Delaney (Townsend, MA), junior Beth Phillips (Worcester, MA), senior Breanna Clement (Pittsfield, ME) and Georgina Bagordo (Sparta, NJ) each tallied assists for BSU. Junior goalkeeper Cassie Johansen (Dartmouth, MA) earned her third win of the season.

The Bears picked up the intensity about halfway through the second half outshooting the AMCATS 15-2 in the period while also holding a 10-1 edge in corners. Cullinane scored her first goal of the year after constant pressure inside the AMCATS' circle in the games 49th minute.

It was quickly 2-0 when Bagordo used a beautiful reverse stick pass to Farland, who one timed a drive to the right corner of the net. Just three minutes later Emily Delaney had a pass from the left wing that Cullinane connected on, while the ball was still in the air, for her second goal of the game.

Anna Maria cut the lead to 3-1, when a Katherine Bant shot found the back of the net. Freshman Kate Ketchum (Palmer, MA) picked up her first collegiate point of her career.

Shelby Farland scored the game's last goal, with a rocket from the top of the circle after a penalty corner, in the 65th minute.
