PAXTON, Mass. (10.8.11) – Freshman goaltender Marita Steinmetz (Grafton, Mass.) had six saves to lead the Anna Maria College field hockey team to a 1-0 win over New England Collegiate Conference foes Wheelock College on Saturday morning at AMCAT Field. With the win the AMCATS improve to 5-7 and remain undefeated in conference play (2-0 NECC). The Wildcats drop to 2-10 (1-1 NECC).
Katherine Bant (Johnstown, NY) opened the scoring at the 11 minute mark with the eventual game winning goal. She picked up a loose ball inside the circle and dangled around a Wheelock defender and put a wrist shot past Wheelock's keeper Michelle Greene (Mansfield, Mass.) for the 1-0 lead.
Wheelock was led by Despina Savvoulides (Norwalk, Conn.) who had four shots on goal and goaltender Michelle Greene (Mansfield, Mass.) who made 5 saves in the loss.
The AMCATS take to the road for the next three games with the first stop at Lasell College next Thursday at 3:30 pm. Wheelock hosts Rivier on Thursday at 8:00 pm.
