Football Ends Historic Season In NCAAs

DOYLESTOWN, PA : The Anna Maria College football team concluded their fairytale 2021 season that saw the AMCATS reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time on Saturday with a 62-10 loss to Delaware Valley University in the first round of the NCAAs in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

The AMCATS – who had never won more than two games in a season – set a program record for wins with seven, won their first-ever Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) Championship, and reached the postseason for the first time in school history. Head Coach Dan Mulrooney was voted ECFC Coach of the Year in recognition of one of the biggest turnarounds in the country.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The AMCATS wasted no time getting on the board as McMillian took the opening kickoff and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown. Just like that, the AMCATS were up 7-0.
  • From there, the Aggies closed out the first quarter with three unanswered touchdowns. After senior running back Donte Simmons (Bristol PA) tied it up with a one-yard rush, Bohannan finished off two drives with touchdowns, the first on the ground and the second in the air, putting Delaware Valley ahead 21-7.
  • Refusing to go quietly, the AMCATS bounced back in the second quarter. Anna Maria senior linebacker Danny George (Leicester, MA) stripped the Delaware Valley ball carrier of the ball which was recovered by junior defensive lineman Elijah Allston (Cheshire, CT). With the benefit of a short field, the AMCATS were able to get back on the board with a drive capped off with a field goal from sophomore kicker Ryan Kent (Marlton, NJ).
  • Bohannan threw his second touchdown of the day with 7:32 left in the second quarter, that coming on a 42-yard completion to senior wide receiver Aaron Nelson (Hampstead MD). Then, in the closing seconds of the half, Bohannan punched in another touchdown to put the home team ahead 34-10 at the half.
  • In the second half, Simmons capped off another Delaware Valley drive with a one-yard touchdown run, and freshman running back Julian White        (Philadelphia PA) went 80 yards on the first play from scrimmage, giving the Aggies a 48-10 lead. The AMCATS never threatened again.
