Cohen’s Six Touchdowns Lifts Football At Keystone

LA PLUME, PA : Senior quarterback Alex Cohen (Plymouth, MA) threw for five touchdowns and rushed for one more as the Anna Maria College football team won 55-35 at Keystone College on Saturday in La Plume, Pennsylvania, giving the AMCATS their best start to a season ever at 3-1.

STANDOUTS:

  • Cohen went 21 of 24 passing for 285 yards, throwing for five touchdowns and rushing for a sixth. He also posted 46 yards rushing. Cohen's 87.5 completion percentage was a career-high and a school record. His five touchdown passes matched a school record he had already tied.
  • Anna Maria graduate student running back Kristian Sapp (Cromwell, CT) rushed for 150 yards on 18 carries and one score. Sapp's rushing yardage were the most in a single game by an AMCAT since 2014.
  • Anna Maria junior wide receiver David Robinson (Boston, MA) tied a school record with three touchdown receptions, part of his four on the day. Robinson led the team with 78 receiving yards.
  • Anna Maria sophomore wide receiver Deandre Wallace (Waterbury, CT) scored a touchdown for the third straight week, recording four catches for 73 yards and one score.
  • Anna Maria grad student wide receiver Hayden Braga (Foster, RI) got the AMCATS on the board on the opening kickoff, returning the kick 76 yards for a touchdown. Braga also posted four catches for 44 yards.
  • Anna Maria senior Justin McMillian (Middletown, CT) got into the game at receiver and finished with four catches for 43 yards and one touchdown.
  • Anna Maria sophomore linebacker Sam Jakana (Coto De Caza, CA) led the AMCAT defense with nine tackles including two for a loss. Jakana's ten-yard sack on the Keystone quarterback on third down late in the third quarter forced a punt, setting up another Anna Maria score.
  • Anna Maria grad student defensive lineman Jude Sampson (Waterbury, CT) recorded four tackles-for-loss on the Giants, tying for third all-time on the AMCATS' single-game record.
  • For Keystone, Kevin Lewis (Philadelphia, PA) and Mujaheed Muhammad (Philadelphia, PA) combined for three rushing scores as Muhammad scampered for a team-high 122 yards on 12 carries, with a long of 58.
  • Anna Maria head coach Dan Mulrooney is now the AMCATS' all-time leader in career victories.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a shootout first-half saw them leading 27-21 at halftime, the AMCATS started to pull away in the third quarter. An eight-play drive to open the second half was capped off with a six-yard touchdown run by Sapp to extend the lead to 33-21. After Keystone went three-and-out on the following drive, Anna Maria needed just four plays as Cohen found Robinson for a 23-yard pass and then connected with Wallace for a two-point conversion. The Giants were never able to close the gap closer than two scores.

The AMCATS, off to their best start in school history, will get a rest next week with a bye. Anna Maria will be back on the field on Saturday when they travel to Alfred State for a 12:00 p.m. game.
