Baseball Sweeps Hornets

PAXTON, Mass: The Anna Maria Baseball Team was able to defeat Northern Vermont University-Lyndon in both contests this afternoon ending with a 6-4 final.

 

Game 1:

 

Top Performers

 

The Hornets (1-6) were led by leadoff hitter Ryder Thornton who finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Zak Johnson also contributed 2 hits along with an RBI.

 

Hornet starter Jake Jourdain pitched 5 innings allowing just 2 runs and 3 hits, while tallying 7 strikeouts.

 

For the AMCATS (2-0) Adam Twitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass.) had a 3-for-4 game with an RBI. Greg Gehring (Southhold, New York) had a huge 2 run single, as he went going 1-for-4. Jason Shell (Sandwich, Mass.) went 1-for-3 and batted in the last RBI of the game for Anna Maria.

 

Colin Pipkin (Peoria, AZ) pitched the first 4.1 innings, where he sat down 5 Hornets and gave up just 5 hits.

Jake Crevier (Ware, Mass.) got the win in game one with 1.1 innings of work allowing just 2 hits with 2 strikeouts.

Liam Cunningham (Northbridge, Mass.) got the save, with only one hit allowed and a strikeout.

 

What Happened

 

The AMCATS jumped off to an early lead of 1-0 in the top of the first inning, and held onto that until the bottom of the 5th when a couple of AMC errors allowed 2 Hornet runs to come across.

 

The majority of the game was a pitcher's duel as both sides struggle to put the ball in play, until the sixth inning when AMC was able to put up a five spot and regain the lead at 6-2.

 

NVU would make one last push, with two more runs coming across in the bottom of the sixth, to get the final score of 6-4.

 

Game Two:

NVU (1-7) only had 3 total hits in game 2, Johnson was responsible for one of those 3, with the only RBI. Caleb Laroche had the second hit, with Cameron Flinn coming up with the last.

 

James Mundy went through 5 innings giving up 7 hits with 2 earned runs and 6 strikeouts.

Ben Rollins who came in relief was tagged with the loss after letting up 4 hits and 3 earned.

 

The AMCATS were led by Noah Holland (Sandwich, Mass.) who went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI's. Nick Genatossio (Sutton, Mass.) found his stride in game 2 as he put two in play for base hits with a triple and an RBI. Kosta Drosidis (Holden, Mass.) also tallied an RBI on a moon shot to the deep left center field fence for a double.

 

Jack Marzec (Northbridge, Mass.) went 4 innings allowing only 1 hit and 3 earned runs, with 6 strikeouts.

Andrew Rodriques (East Providence, RI) got the win with 3 innings of work allowing only 2 hits and accumulating 5 strikeouts.

 

What Happened

 

The 'CATS struggled early to find the strike zone, as Lyndon was able to go up 4-1 through the first 4 innings with only one hit. The first 4 innings were very quiet for both teams, until the 5th with Anna Maria woke up the bats and got a total of 5 runs between the 5th and 6th innings to come back and take the 6-4 where it would finish.

The AMCATS will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they go against an Indiana school in Trine. First pitch will be at 1:15PM in Auburndale, FL.
