Nighthawks Shutout ‘Cats in Rain Shortened Game

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass – Thursday night the AMCATS took on the Newbury College Nighthawks at the New England Baseball Complex in non-conference action in the rain, under the lights. As the game progressed the rain got heavier and the runs kept coming across for the nighthawks. At the end of five innings, the game was called due to the rain and Newbury earned themselves a 10-0 victory over Anna Maria.

Anna Maria grabbed seven hits in the game, Nick Genatossio recording the only multi-hit game with a single and a double. Senior Tanner Jakola had the only other extra base hit, a double, in a one-for-two night. Other starters with hits were first baseman Mike Tourony and designated hitter Jacob Zamora. Coming off the bench and getting pinch hit singles were Trevor Brown and Justin Robbins. Robbins also stole the first base of his career, stealing third in the bottom of the fifth inning. Catcher Noah Holland went 0-for-one at the plate but was able to draw two walks.

Newbury had eight hits in the game with multi-hit performance from leadoff hitter Brian Cipolla and first baseman Jim McGrorry. McGrorry was also one of two players to drive in two runs in the game along with Javi Martinez. Left fielder David Center and McGrorry recorded the two extra base hits, both doubles, for the nighthawks. Starting pitcher Dante Serino pitched a complete game, seven hitter, allowing the seven AMCAT hits, two walks and struck out six hitters.

Both teams got out of the first inning unscathed, although the AMCATS did get in trouble as the 'Hawks loaded the bases but started Cam Brown was able to shut the door.

In the second inning, the Nighthawks came alive platting six runs in the inning by way of a sacrifice fly from Cipolla, a double by Center, single by Martinez scoring two runs, and finally a McGrorry single which platted Martinez.

In the third, the visitors scored another, extending their lead to seven runs. They would add three more in the top of the fourth inning. The AMCATS had no answer for Serino and the Nighthawk defense and unable to get back in to the game with the rain intensifying, the umpires and coaches decided it was best to call the game once it was official after five innings, giving Newbury the 10-0 victory over the AMCATS.

Anna Maria is back on the diamond on Friday afternoon on the road for a GNAC double header against St. Joe's (Me) beginning at 3:30pm.
