‘Cats Taken Down by Anchormen

NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After beating Fitchburg State Wednesday night in to early Thursday morning in Northborough, the AMCATS were back on the road, carrying a four-game win streak in to a non-conference game against Little East opponent, Rhode Island College. Though the AMCATS had high hopes, the Anchormen were able to extend their winning streak to three, shutting down Anna Maria 6-1 in rainy North Providence.

Anna Maria produced seven hits in the game, all coming from different players in the lineup. Noah Holland went one-for-four in the game with the team's only extra base hit, a double. Adam Twitchell, Mike Tourony, Justin Robbins, Jacob Zamora, Tanner Jakola, and Kino Gray each added hits for the AMCATS. The only run of the game was scored by Jake Crevier. Starting pitcher, Andrew Rodriques threw four innings, allowing eight hits, four runs, three of them earned, while walking two and striking out three. Senior Daniel Chambers came in in relief and pitched three innings of two hit baseball, allowing no runs, walking no hitters and striking out one batter.

The Anchormen reached double-digit hits in the game with 11, all singles. They had multi-hit games from lead of hitter Jeff Silva, who was three-for-five in the game with an RBI and two runs scored, while Rommy Morel, Frank Pettinato, and Ray Zincone each added two hits for RIC. Morel and Zincone also scored two runs apiece. Brad Douglas drove in two runs for the Anchormen in a one-for-four afternoon. Starting pitcher, Myles Levy pitched seven innings, allowing five hits, allowing no runs, walking no hitters and struck out five AMCATS earning the victory.

After a Twitchell single to open the game, the Anchormen retired the AMCATS in order and scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the inning when Douglas struck out on a dropped third strike whi he was thrown out on but it allowed Silva to score from third.

The AMCATS could get nothing started in the second or third and would surrender two more runs to RIB in the bottom of the third, giving the home team a 3-0 advantage after three innings.

In the fourth, Silva singled, scoring Rincone to give the Anchormen a 4-0 lead. At this point, Chambers was brought in to relieve Rodriques and all but shut RIC down for the next three innings. Unfortunately, the AMC offense was unable to answer or get any runs back for Rodriques or Chambers.

In the bottom of the eighth, Jakola now on the mound for Anna Maria, the Anchormen scored their sixth and final run of the game on a Douglas single that would eventually plate Zincone on an error with no RBI going to Douglas on the play.  

Down 6-0 in the ninth, the AMCATS were down to their final three outs. Crevier walked to begin the innings, followed by Zamora's pinch hit single and then another single by Jakola to load the bases with no outs. With the bases loaded and not the tying run in the hole, the AMCATS scored their first run on a wild pitch, bringing home Crevier to make the score 6-1, runners on second and third, still no outs. Pinch hitter Kino Gray came in to the game and struck out which was followed up by a Phil Antonucci walk to once again load the bases, this time with one out. Twitchell came to the plate, one-for-four on the day, and struck out and on the same play, Antonucci was picked off of first base ending the game, 6-1, in favor of the hosts, snapping the AMCATS four-game winning streak dropping them to 9-11 on the season.

The 'Cats are back on the field Tuesday, April 3^rd at 3pm facing MASCAC opponent MCLA at the New England Baseball Complex.
