AMCATS Lose Two to Wentworth in Final Day in Florida

AUBURNDALE, Florida – The AMCATS played a double header against Wentworth Saturday morning in their final day in Florida before returning to Paxton to begin their northern schedule. Unfortunately, the Leopards came in to the day with more fire power and swept the AMCATS, 14-4 in game one, and 11-2 in game two.

Game 1

The AMCATS only had seven baserunners in game one, recording five hits and drawing two walks. Jason Shell had the only extra base hit in the game for Anna Maria with a double. Shell drove in a run and scored one of his own. Justin Robbins, who has had a very good trip offensively, went 0ne-for-three in this one with a single, a walk, and an RBI. Coming off the bench, sophomore catcher, Jacob Zamora drove in a run, going one-for-two. The AMC pitching was ineffective through the first 3.2 innings. For the final 3.1 innings of game one, senior Trevor Brown came out of the bullpen, allowed just one hit and struck out four hitters to keep the Leopards from continuing their scoring.

Wentworth's lineup had three hitters record multi-hit games. Tyler Weninger had three hits and drove in four runs, scoring two runs of his own. Tim Elrick also had three hits for the Leopards which helped him drive in three runs. With two hits in the game, nine hitter Kyle Litwin went two-for-five on the day with and RBI and a run scored. Starting pitcher Ryan Obin pitched seven innings of five hit ball, allowing just the three runs, only walked two hitters and struck out nine hitters.

The AMCATS weren't able to settle in in game one. The Leopards scored two runs in the first inning, shut down the AMCATS in their offensive half and went on to score four more runs in the second and then added two more in the top of the third inning.

Down 8-0 after two and a half innings, the AMCATS offense broke through in the bottom of the third inning, scoring two runs on Shell's double which scored Adam Twitchell, and Robbins singled to score Shell from second.

The Leopards wasted no time remaining those two runs and then some, scoring three runs in the fourth to go up by 10, 12-2. That 10-run lead would last until the sixth inning when Zamora added to the 'Cats tally, driving in Noah Holland.

Now 12-3 heading in to the seventh hand final inning, the AMCAT defense allowed two more Wentworth base runners to cross the plate, one on a wild pitch. Anna Maria, was unable to answer in the bottom of the seventh and dropped game one, 14-3

Game 2

Game two was a lot of the same from the AMCATS. They were able to get eight hits in this one, drawing just one walk. Jason Shell went two-for-four in the game, the only multi-hit performance for Anna Maria on the day. Shell drove in a run as well, the only RBI credited to the 'Cats in game two. Freshman Jake Crevier and Anthony Checo scored the two runs in the game for AMC. Starting pitcher Liam Cunningham worked five innings, struck out four hitters and walked two on the day, recording the loss.

Wentworth got another three-hit game from Tyler Weninger, who went three-for-three, with a three-bagger, in game two and scored three runs. Andrew Elliott, who hit a double, went two-for-three and drove in two runs in the win. Ross Golebiewski and Bryon Kucharski each had two hits in the contest, Kucharski also drove in a run. It was a relatively short day for the Leopard bullpen with starting pitcher Mike Callagee following up a seven inning outing in game one from Obin up with a six inning day. Callagee allowed six hits and no runs, striking out six hitters.

A lot like game one, game two was controlled by the Leopards. Wentworth scored in four of the six innings they hit in, leading 11-0 over the AMCATS heading in to the seventh inning of play.

Looking to salvage something from the game, the AMCATS got aggressive and were able to score two in the seventh with Crevier scoring on a wild pitch, and Check scoring on a Shell single to left. The two runs were not enough and the AMCATS were retired in the seventh dropping the two game set with Wentworth, game two 11-2.

The AMCATS will be back on the diamond Wednesday March 14th when they travel to play Dean College at 3:30pm.
