AMCATS Drop Both to Lyndon State

AUBURNDALE, Fla – Saturday morning marked the start of Anna Maria's Spring Break trip in Florida. The AMCATS opened their Florida schedule with a double dip against Lyndon State. Though the AMCATS put up a fight in both games, they ultimately lost both games, 2-1 and 9-6.

Game 1

For the AMCATS in game one, Sopomore Adam Twitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass) went two-for-three in the game. His two hits were two of the six the 'Cats had in the game. Freshman third Jake Crevier (Ware, Mass) also recorded two hits in the game, both singles. Nick Genatossio (Sutton, Mass) scored the lone run for the AMCATS. He was 0-for-one in the game with a walk. Colin Pipkin (Peoria, Arizona) started the game on the mound for the 'Cats and would get the loss in the game.

The Hornets offense was relatively unheard from in the first game as well. Sophomore Cody Smith and Tyler Roberge were the only two hornets to record hits in the game, Roberge's a double. Smith scored the first run of the game, the second was scored by Ryder Thornton. James Mundy was on the mound for Lyndon and received the win in the game.

The game was slow to get started with each team taking three innings to turn the lineup over. Neither team would score a run until the Hornets broke the game open with two runs on a busted defensive play by Anna Maria. Though the AMCATS struck back in the 5^th, they were unable to get the second run back and fell in game one to drop to 0-2 on the season.

Game 2

In game two, the AMCATS had a much better offensive showing. Adam Twitchell scored two runs in the game was one-for-two with a single and two walks. Noah Holland (Sandwich, Mass) would also score twice in the game. He was one-for-four with a double, and also reached base on an error.

The Hornets were led offensively by Zack Johnson and Zach Hale who each had two-hit days, each with a single and a double to their name. The pair would also score two runs each. Sam Ognenoff was one-for-two on the day with a single and two runs scored.

Game two went a little differently than game one. The AMCATS opened the game with a run in the first inning when Twitchell scored to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead. That lead would last until the second when Hale would score on a Johnson double to tie the game at one apiece.

The AMCATS would control the offensive side of things with freshman Jack Marzec on the mound controlling the Hornets. Anna Maria scored two more runs in third when Crevier and Holland came around on a defensive blunder by Lyndon.  AMC carried their 3-1 lead in to the fifth and would add two more runs in the inning with Greg Gehring and Holland scoring tow run the AMCATS lead out to 5-1.

In the bottom of the 5^th, the Hornets would get right back on Anna Maria's heels scoring three runs in an inning in which they sent all nine hitters to the plate.

Heading in to the to the sixth, the AMCATS held a one run lead in a game they had mostly controlled defensively. In the sixth, they plated another run when Twitchell scored for the second time in the game. The AMCATS pitching was able to sit the Hornets down one-two-three in the sixth.

In the seventh inning, with the AMCATS cruising, Lyndon was able to shift the momentum. The Hornets, down two, needed to score in order to send the game to the bottom of the inning. For the second time in two innings, Lyndon sent all nine hitters to the plate, scoring five runs in the inning to take a 9-6 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the AMCATS had no answer for their opponent, going down in order to end the game in favor of Lyndon State, 9-6.

The AMCATS are back on the field Sunday against Martin Luther College for a double header beginning at 9am.
