Frederick Hits Walkoff Homerun, Baseball Splits with UMPI

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass.—The Anna Maria College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the Owls of UMaine-Presque Isle on Sunday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Massachusetts.

The AMCATS posted a 6-3 walk-off win in extra innings in game one before suffering a 13-9 loss in the nightcap. With today's results, the AMCATS improve to 5-7 on the season, while the Owls open the season at 1-1.

Anna Maria 6, Presque Isle 3 – Eight Innings

A three-run homerun by freshman Nate Frederick (Worcester, Mass.) in the bottom of the eighth inning broke open a 3-3 tie to seal the win in game one.

After giving up a run in the top of the fourth, the AMCATS scored two in the bottom of the fifth and another in the sixth to hold a 3-1 lead entering the seventh inning. The Owls managed to string together two runs two hits and an error in the top of the seventh to force extra innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, McNair and Frederick hit back-to-back singles and were followed by a walk by David Julian (Sterling, Mass.) to load the bases. Senior Corey Andrade (Mashpee, Mass.) took charge from there, hitting a ground-rule double to right-center field to score McNair and Nate Frederick.

An inning later, Frederick tripled to left-center field to score Liam Pickett (Oxford, Mass.). Frederick finished the game with three hits, two for extra bases, and a team-high four RBI.

Frederick also started the game on the mound, throwing four complete innings and giving up one run and five walks while striking out four batters. Brenden Matthews (Worcester, Mass.) pitched 2.1 innings, and Tanner Jakola (Leominster, Mass.) earned the win while pitching the final 1.2 innings. He gave up one hit and pitched one strikeout to take the victory.

Presque Isle 13, Anna Maria 9

A 10-run fourth inning propelled the Owls to their first win of the season in game two. Presque-Isle recorded eight hits in the inning, including back-to-back doubles by Mitch Thayer and Matt Curry. The Owls added three runs in the top of the seventh.

The AMCATS added single runs in the bottom the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but the hosts did most of their damage in the bottom of the seventh, as the team strung together seven hits, including doubles by Jourdan Wydra (Bristol, Conn.) and Michael Kennedy (Naugatuck, Conn.), to score six runs.

Anna Maria was led by Nate Gray (Kingston, N.Y.), who went 4-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. William Bishop (Uxbridge, Mass.), Frederick, Andrades and Wydra all finished with two hits in the game. In total, the AMCATS tallied 15 hits in the game.

The Owls had five different players post two hits apiece: Brady Rowe (Halifax, Nova Scotia), Matt Cauchon (Kingston, Mass.), Matt Curry (Caribou, Maine), Andrew Bartlett (Damariscotta, Maine), and Mitch Thayer (Colchester, Vt.). Adam Begos (Portland, Maine) batted in a team-high four runs.

Saul Nunez (Mapleton, Maine) earned the win on the mound for UMPI, scattering eight hits and two earned runs in six innings of work while totaling seven strikeouts.

Four different AMCAT pitchers saw time on the mound in game two. Andrew Sawyer (Dracut, Mass.) earned the start and took the loss, sacrificing five hits, seven runs, and four walks in 3.1 innings of work.

Anna Maria will be back in action on Tuesday as they open Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play against Albertus Magnus in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader at the New England Baseball Complex.
