Kevin Grey: Live from the 2016 NCAA Convention

Kevin Grey: Live from the 2016 NCAA Convention

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Each January, hundreds of collegiate athletic directors convene at the annual NCAA Convention to vote on new legislation, attend panels, and obtain new training. This year, senior football player Kevin Grey (Marlborough, Mass.) will be in attendance at the convention in San Antonio, Texas, representing the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for both Anna Maria and the GNAC.

Grey will depart for Texas on Wednesday along with three other GNAC SAAC representatives from Suffolk, Norwich, and Johnson & Wales.  Grey will be updating us on his events throughout the week, so check back and to see what exciting things he is experiencing at the convention. One thing is for sure—he will be enjoying warmer weather in Texas than we are in Paxton!

DAY ONE - WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 13TH

We arrived in San Antonio today at 2:00 p.m., and checked into our hotel at about 2:45. From there, we went to the convention center to participate in the SAAC/Special Olymics event to help promote integrated sports. We played flag football with the Special Olympians--right up my ally! Then we rounded out the day with dinner as a group. Stay tuned for more! -Kevin Grey

DAY TWO - THURSDAY, JANUARY 14TH

Day two was packed with events! We started out early, as our first seminar on fundraising began at 8:30 a.m. From there, we moved onto a panel about life after being a collegiate student-athlete. At that panel, Carmen Tebbe Priebe, Ph.D., gave us great insight on the importance of health after sports. This one really resonated with me, as my AMCAT football career is complete!

The best part of the day came during lunch, when former Secretary of State Condaleezza Rice provided the keynote address after accepting the NCAA President's Gerald R. Ford Award. Ms. Rice talked about many things, including her background, her determination, and the importance and benefits of being a college athlete. She also talked a little bit about the college football playoff!

After lunch, we ran into Dr. Mark Emmert, the NCAA President. He was kind enough to pose for a photo with all of us--see below! At 4:00 p.m., we went to the business session, where Dr. Emmert spoke along with university presidents and answered questions from the national SAAC members. The last thing we attended was the Division III Student Forum. I'm doing lots of tweeting while I'm down here. Follow my tweets

DAY THREE - JANUARY 15TH

On our last full day in Texas, we began the day early at 8:00 a.m. to attend the issue forum where people discussed the issues that Division III athletic directors voted on later in the day. Lunch was the annual Division III Luncheon. After that, we had some free time which we used to explore San Antonio--we even went to the Alamo!

Dinner was the highlight of the trip, as we attended the Honors Celebration, where current and former student-athletes received awards. We met some celebrities and professional athletes at this dinner--check out my photo gallery to see me posing with some famous people! We met Dikembe Mutombo, who played 18 seasons in the NBA, Russell Maryland, who was a defensive tackle in the NFL, and Steve Smith, who played for the Atlanta Hawks and is now a broadcaster for TNT.

Tomorrow we fly home, hopefully landing in Boston before the Patriots kick off. Go Pats!
