The Alumni Experience: Emily Standring'17

The Alumni Experience: Emily Standring'17

PAXTON, MA: Today, we will be hearing from a field hockey alumni about her experiences at Anna Maria and her advice to current students. Emily Standring (Worcester, MA) is a 2017 graduate of AMC and played defense for the field hockey team. During her three seasons as an AMCAT, Emily played in 62 games, starting in every single one, and recorded ten defensive saves.

We asked Emily some questions to shed some light on her time here at Anna Maria.

Why did you choose AMC?

I went to another school for a semester, and I was not happy there. I looked into schools closer to home, and AMC was one of the schools that happened to be right up the street from me. I had a couple of friends that went there and loved it. I then talked to the field hockey coach at the time, telling her I was interested in coming to AMC and playing field hockey. I ended up staying the night with my friend and fell in love with the school. It’s a beautiful little campus (especially in the fall) with an outstanding criminal justice program and an excellent field hockey team with great coaches.

Did college live up to your expectations?

Yes, it did. I knew going into college wasn’t going to be easy. I would be busy with school work, playing a sport, and working. I learned a lot about time management, and balancing all three helped me be more organized and be on a schedule. Even though I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, I also knew it would be fun, which it was.

Why did you choose your sport?

I chose to play field hockey because my dad wanted me to play hockey as a kid initially, my mom didn’t want me to because she didn’t want me to become bowlegged like the rest of the men on my dad’s side of the family. Field hockey was the closest thing to playing hockey. I started field hockey in the 7th grade and fell in love with the sport.

How did your sport at AMC change you as a person?

Playing a sport helped me in multiple ways to change me as a person. It taught me teamwork, patience, commitment, and good sportsmanship. Being apart of a team or club is one of the best things you can do for yourself, in my opinion.

What advice do you have for current and new students?

The advice I have for current and new students is to get involved! Whether it is clubs or sports, just get involved with the AMC community, meet new people, experience new things, and have fun!
