The Alumni Experience: Anne Melanson '20

PAXTON, MA: Today, we will be hearing from a field hockey alumni about her experiences at Anna Maria and her advice to current students. Anne Melanson (Grafton, MA) is a 2020 graduate of AMC. While with the AMCATS, she played midfield and forward. During her four seasons, Anne played in 72 games, scoring 20 goals and seven assists for 47 points. 

We asked Anne some questions to shed some light on her time here at Anna Maria.

Why did you choose AMC?

I chose Anna Maria because it checked every box. I wanted a small school with a good education program, where I could play field hockey. 

Did college live up to your expectations?

Anna Maria definitely lived up to my expectations! I made such strong connections on campus and loved every year here. 

Why did you choose your sport?

My mom played field hockey in high school, so as a freshman in high school, I decided to follow in her footsteps- I fell instantly in love with it. 

How did your sport at AMC change you as a person?

Field hockey at Anna Maria is one of the best parts of my experience. The team is a family that supports and pushes each other to achieve greatness. Being on the team, I was forced to push myself physically and mentally (nothing like a 5:30 am locker room time to start the day).

How did Anna Maria Prepare you for your career?

The education program at Anna Maria is amazing. I was in the classroom during my sophomore year, observing teachers in their day-to-day life. By the time I was student-teaching my senior year, I was very much prepared for it. As a first-year teacher, I can look back and truly recognize how much preparedness and support I was given as an education student at Anna Maria. 

 What advice do you have for current and new students?

My advice for students would be to step out of their comfort zone and try new things. College can be a scary time for anyone, but if you put yourself out there and are open to new experiences and new people, you will have some fantastic memories.
